I have been researching about North Cumberland (New River, Royal Blue and Sundquist WMA's) as a nice place for a beginner to ride an ATV and also it seems very scenic and that Ride Royal Blue is a nice campground. I have spoken with Rusty Dunn (a very nice and helpful fellow) at TN WMA and he told me they have been working on Sundquist the trails after winter but have not had a chance to get to the other areas yet. He mentioned they had just uploaded the new trail map on tnwildlife.org last Friday. It is the Sundquist map from what I can tell with about 75 miles of trails listed. Most trails are easy to moderate, with one difficult trail. I called Ride Royal Blue Campground and they said they have access to 400 plus miles. They are sending me a map, I am guessing this must be for all three WMA's, if anyone knows what areas the 400 miles includes I would would be grateful. Also, if you have any info to pass along about riding the ATV, trails and camping in these areas I would appreciate it so much. I will be visiting TN soon to ride and I am researching Brimstone Recreation and other areas, to try and deterime which area is best for a beginner ATV rider and a first time visitor to the mountains. Thanks.

That could be a little pricey if your from out of state. Ity requires and out of state fishing licence to ride the WMA's......don't know off the top of my head the exact # so i wont throw anything out there just yet If your a resident its about 50 bucks, no biggie then Some of Royal Blue is what was bought from Brimstone a few years back. I have riden some of the old Brimstone part but not since they sold it. Brimstone has alot of trails that you will enjoy, you can check at the permit office about getting a guide for a day also.

For more info I went out to the camper and looked at my permit and what I had to buy was a 071 NR Hunting No Big Game at $91.00 and a 093 WMA Small Game at $17.00 for a total of $108.00.

If you ride 2-up or in a SxS, only one permit is required on a WMA. It don't matter if it's the driver or passenger, as long as one of you has it. If you're riding separately, each has to have one.

I forgot to mention that Mr. Dunn told me riding separately we each would need either of the following: 7-day hunting fishing license $50.50 and the Type 93 Permit $17.00 = $67.50 or Annual Hunting/Fishing License $91.00 plus the Type 93 permit. $17.00 = $108.00 It was opposed to spending the $191.00 for the special use permit. We are out of state. Since I'm not sure how often we would be able to visit, we may just go with the 7 day for now. I appreciate everyone info very much. We will also keep Brimstone in mind for sure, if not this trip then maybe the next one. I thought I had read where there was limited camping behind the Brimstone office or at a campground in Huntsville. Anyone know about this? I have read so much.

We have a campground across from the riding area. It has all the hookups and usually has vacancies. If you want to know what is available and when you can always call here at the office.

Just move down here, it's only $45 a year for residents. Annual hunt/fish combo (001) $28, Small Game WMA (093) $17. Not to mention, look at all the gas you'd save from having to drive down here!

Yeah that sounds like a wonderful idea, but I don't see being able to move up to TN at this point in my life.
